JAPANESE Ukiyo-e
Ukiyo-e, which translates to "pictures of the floating world," is a genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such scenes as female beauties, kabuki actors, sumo wrestlers, scenes from history and folk tales, travel scenes and landscapes, flora and fauna, and erotica. This art form captures the transient world of pleasures and beauty in vibrant detail, reflecting the hedonistic lifestyle of Japan during the Edo period.
